Career Coach: Corinne Mills

Corinne Mills talks to BBC News 24 giving her tips on how to be competitive in today’s job market. Private Sector jobs growth slowed in April and Reed’s index of vacancies slowed by 2%.

There are fewer jobs being created in the private sector according to new figures so just how do you make yourself stand out?

“I think the first thing they need to do is apply for jobs that are right for them. I think that people tend to panic a little and start a scatter gun approach, going for all kinds of roles. But you need to be really clear and focused – apply only for the roles that are right for you and then make sure you sell yourself effectively. So I think be creative about where you look for jobs, so yes, they are on the job boards and there are adverts but think local as well – who do you know that might know about jobs? So that’s the first thing, the second is make sure the job is right for you and the third thing; sell yourself effectively. And with all of this, get help if you need it – it’s trickier than it looks. There are Career Coaches that can help, but you also have free resources. There’s the Government website, a lot of the recruitment sites like reed, monster, telegraph, guardian – they have some really good websites you can go to for career advice as well as the Personal Career Management website which has loads of free articles on there you can have a look at.

Private Sector demand is up by 22% from a year ago due to the public sector job cuts. The main job growths were in IT and engineering.
