Outplacement is a service provided by companies to support employees who are being made redundant or leaving via settlement agreement. Outplacement programmes assist these individuals in finding new employment opportunities and navigating the job market. While outplacement may seem like an added expense for companies, it actually offers many benefits not only to the employees but also to the company as a whole. In this blog post, we will delve into the advantages of outplacement and how it can be a valuable resource for both employers and employees.

What is outplacement

Employees can be made redundant for many reasons, such as organisational downsizing, a company merger or restructuring.  If an organisation decides that they might prefer someone different in a role they may also agree an exit with the individual through a generous settlement agreement which offers outplacement as a sweetener to soften the blow.  The main objective of outplacement is to provide support to employees during this challenging time and help them transition smoothly into new roles. It typically includes services like career coaching, advising individuals on their career options and helping them with all aspects of their personal brand including advice on their CV and LinkedIn profile.  They will also be offered assistance with their job search, including online applications and recruitment boards, managing recruiters and headhunters, networking and preparation for interviews.  By offering these resources, companies show their commitment to the well-being of their employees, even when they are no longer part of the organisation.

Benefits of outplacement

Maintaining employee confidence and motivation

One of the main benefits of outplacement is that it helps employees maintain their confidence and motivation during a job transition. Losing a job can be a blow to one’s self-esteem, but outplacement services can help individuals manage this change more positively, providing both the psychological and practical support needed to successfully land their next role.  Also by helping individuals identify the roles which are a great fit for them, they find it much easier to market themselves which not only boosts their chances of finding a new job more quickly but also means that they are likely to be happier and more successful in the role in the longer term.

Cultivate a positive brand reputation

Outplacement is not just a goodwill gesture; helping your employees to be successful in the future helps promote a positive brand reputation for the employer.  When employees are treated with respect and provided with assistance in their job search, it reflects positively on the company. This helps retain existing employees who observe their departing colleagues being treated respectfully, which in turn helps attract future talent because of the organisation’s positive reputation.

Mitigate risks and foster ethical practices

Furthermore, outplacement can mitigate the risk of negative publicity or legal actions that may arise from employee terminations. By offering support and resources, companies demonstrate their commitment to fair and ethical practices and their desire to treat the individual with respect. Individuals who feel supported to find another role are less likely to be disgruntled, seek legal recourse or tarnish the company’s image through negative reviews or public statements.
